Grammatical development of Dutch speaking typically developing children and children with DLD aged 7 to 10 years

Abstract

 To obtain an overview of the existing knowledge of the grammatical development of Dutch-speaking typically developing (TD) children and children with developmental language disorder (DLD), aged 7 to 10 years, an exploratory literature search was carried out. In this paper, the findings are presented and linked to clinical practice in order to support grammatical goal setting for speech and language therapists who provide treatment for children with DLD in this age group. Speech and language therapists are the primary professionals involved in intervention of grammatical problems of children with DLD. An overview of the grammatical development of Dutch children up to the ages 5 to 6 years, i.e. the development of grammatical complexity and grammatical errors, is widely available. However, this overview is currently lacking for older TD children. To set and prioritize grammatical therapy goals, both knowledge about grammatical development in TD children and children with DLD is imperative.
